If there is one thing that the internet has done for us, it has given us the ability to compare prices and services more closely amongst different service providers or sellers. It was easy in the past to bamboozle consumers with complex pricing structures, and while it often still takes time and some sharp wits to plough through the information, at least it is far more readily available online.
Take car insurance companies not on comparison sites for example. In the past we may get a handful of insurance quotes from insurance companies but it was difficult to compare them. Level of cover per item; what is included; excess payment etc.
It was tempting to go for the cheapest only to find out at a later date that it did not cover you as comprehensively as the others, as people have found out to their cost.
It is now far easier to see comparison tables of insurance quotes on the internet which detail exactly what each ones cover or do not cover.
Flights are another example – and this is still far from clear, although better now! Many airlines charge extras which do not seem apparent until you are almost at the end of the booking process. So you could be billed for credit card charges, reserved seats, meals, the price of which would only be disclosed in the final stages.
